From July 8th to 10th, 2016, the 13th Hanseatic City Festival "Bunter Hering" will take place in Frankfurt-Oder and Słubice on the Polish side of the Oder. Concerts, rowing competitions, a fair, parties and much more await visitors. The competitions such as cherry stone spitting and the traditional duck race inspire young and old alike. The rowing regatta of the three faculties of the Viadrina University is just as traditional.

But what is the “colorful herring” all about? When wedding couples tie the knot in Frankfurt City Hall, they often like to be photographed in front of the south gable of the City Hall. The photographer crouches down so deeply that the golden fish, which is hanging on a fishing rod on the gable, is also in the wedding photo. These pictures, taken diagonally from bottom to top, are an absolute specialty of Frankfurt-Oder. The herring is the sign of Frankfurt-Oder as a Hanseatic city.

More than 100,000 visitors came to Frankfurt-Oder on the “Bunten Herring” weekend. An overnight stay in our hotel in the center of Frankfurt-Oder is therefore a good way to reach the event quickly. Since 2008 the town festival has also been held in Slubice. There the event is called “Swawolny Kogucik”.
