Around 35 kilometers from your Hotel in Frankfurt-Oder lies Neuzelle. Neuzelle is not only known for the Neuzelle monastery, but also as a state-approved resort. The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1268. So the monastery will be celebrating its 750th birthday next year. It is therefore planned for next year that members of the Cistercian order will move into the monastery again. This year, however, the first thing to remember is the dissolution of the monastery in 1817.
The monastery also includes a monastery brewery, the last of its kind in Brandenburg. Beer has been brewed here according to old tradition for more than 400 years. At first the monks only brewed beer for their own use, later they delivered it to the surrounding villages. Today you can take part in a guided tour and learn how the well-known beer is made. A special attraction is that you can also bathe in beer in Neuzelle. In addition to traditional beer, there are also homemade schnapps from the Neuzelle monastery. Delicacies were made in the monastery distillery 400 years ago. Today the distillery is a show distillery where tours and tastings take place.
If you want to learn more about the life of the former employees in the monastery, you should visit the Neuzeller straw house. The museum with the house and stables was built in 1780, making it one of the oldest buildings in Neuzelle. The farmer's museum is also a nice museum. Agriculture and its development are documented here to this day. The facility includes rural furniture and techniques that can also be tried out. Actions such as milk skimming are also offered as demonstrations.
And the last functioning mill in the area is also in Neuzelle. Although it was shut down at the beginning of the 20th century, it can now be visited again after numerous restoration works. During demonstrations you will learn more about the history of the historic sawmill. Many regional foods are offered in the mill shop and everything is prepared for a little refreshment in the Mühlenklause.
Those who like to be out and about in nature can explore the Schlaubetal nature park on a four-kilometre-long nature trail. During your hike you may also come across the Oder-Neisse estuary in Ratzdorf. The "Cross of Encounter" stands on the Polish side of the river as a sign of peaceful coexistence of all peoples. On the way, hikers also encounter unique stones, so-called boulders. The park of the Bomsdorf manor house is also ideal for a short walk. The former ancestral seat of the Knights of Bomsdorf has a pretty park with valuable trees and many ponds.
